MindMatters offers a host of treatments and strategies to assist children and the parents, educators, or childhood professionals involved in their care. We strive to eliminate the guesswork in deciphering the best methods of support and most sound guidelines for a child’s growth. We are committed to accurately matching interventions to children’s specific needs, creating their own personalized roadmap to success.

School Consultation & Programming
A child will spend 40+ hours per week in school and completing school-based assignments. This commitment is significant, and we are devoted to aiding children, families, and educators in making the most out of their time together.

Determining a child’s specific underlying vulnerabilities and talents gives us an accurate picture of what is driving a child’s struggles. This information then helps us to collaborate with classroom teachers, special educators, tutors, teacher consultants, AI consultants, school counselors, social workers, occupational and physical therapists, and speech and language therapists to create and implement efficient programs that meet the specific needs of a child – including IEP and 504 planning. Such tailored treatment plans can lead to a child feeling better about school overall, which influences academic growth, self-esteem and confidence

Parent Guidance and Education
There are no definitive manuals on how to raise children, and those with special needs might not benefit from typical or even “reasonable” approaches. When parents learn special tools to address their child’s unique challenges – in academics, relationships, outlooks, or other important areas of growth – children with special needs benefit greatly. Be sure to ask about MindMatters’ structured parent guidance and education consultations that help get families back on track within their homes, manage their child’s developmental challenges, and relieve stress for parents and children alike, in turn promoting family unity, strength, and harmony through positive experiences and success.

Assistance with Medication Considerations
Medication is a common form of treatment for a host of childhood disorders. We collaborate with physicians in the community to help determine what medication regimen, if any, would be best suited for a child with certain underlying vulnerabilities. We offer tools that go beyond observations or clinical interviews to test a child’s cognitive, emotional, and social make-up, which can assist other practitioners in making sound judgments based upon a complete clinical picture.

We are able to pinpoint diagnoses related to ADD or ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s, PDD-NOS, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Depression and its various forms, Anxiety Disorders (including Social Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders), Thought Disorder, various Personality Disorders, effects of trauma, effects of injuries or medical conditions, and various attachment-based difficulties. Discovering the underlying structure in a particular child can ultimately help create stronger, more efficient matches between professionals’ treatments and a child’s needs.

Individual & Family Psychotherapy
Once parental understanding, appropriate school programming, and medication issues have been established, children with special needs can benefit greatly from one-on-one assistance by a MindMatters professional. Currently, we offer specialized programs for children with problems in establishing positive outlooks or secure friendships, as well as meeting expected daily life-skills responsibilities (see Social Development Programs below). We also work with children who show increased anxiety or fear levels, are diagnosed with ADD, or are thought to be depressed. We are proud to offer specialized programs that address the needs of those diagnosed with Nonverbal Learning Disorder or Asperger’s Syndrome, as well. Because of the many factors involved in a child’s development, principles of family therapy are used in most all of our work.

Social Development Programs
Friendships and other interpersonal relationships matter, too! In fact, the quality of a child’s friendships better predicts his or her success and happiness in adulthood much more than IQ or even academic achievement.

MindMatters goes well beyond most social skills training programs to address the rich and incredibly important domain of social development. Techniques we use include videotaping and computer-software programs to assist children in learning about body language and nonverbal cues, working with schools to develop peer-integration strategies for children, and utilizing Social Stories™ (structured and practical vignettes that children and teens can apply in specific social situations). Social skills training groups are also available, and Floor-Time strategies help younger children in our clinic learn about relationships through play. Most importantly, these techniques can be taught to parents for use within their home!

NLD and Asperger’s Treatment Program
Dr. John Milanovich, neuropsychologist and founder of MindMatters, strives to lead our community’s understanding of Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) and Asperger’s Syndrome, as he is one of the few experts in Michigan and the Midwest that treats such conditions. He has developed a comprehensive treatment program that addresses the academic, family, and social difficulties experienced by children diagnosed with NLD or Asperger’s. If a child is suffering from either disorder, consultation with Dr. Milanovich is a must!
